Yoga Postures: Back to Basics
This 2.5 hour workhop will give you the opportunity to learn more about common postures in yoga classes. We’ll explore the things that there often isn’t time to ask in an hour long class… where should my foot be, how do I hold my arms, is this right?
Through this workshop, I’ll guide you through the parts of your body to engage in certain postures, the alignment of different body parts, where your gaze should be and how subtle changes can make a big difference. And, we’ll also explore what you can do if a certain posture just doesn’t work in your body.
When done correctly for your body, the postures in yoga should help to strengthen, lengthen and mobilise. Over time you notice your wrists don’t ache as much, your lower back doesn’t pinch in certain positions and you feel more confident to try those balances.
The foundation of the session will be a vinyasa style flow, with pauses in between to break down postures.
Some of the postures we’ll break down:
Sun salutations (which include vinyasas - we’ll break down each component and will explore different options whether you’re a newbie or more intermediate) - Surya Namaskara
Downward facing dog - Adho Mukha Svanasana
Cobra - Bhujangasana
Warriors 1, 2 & 3 - Virabhadrasana 1, 2 & 3
Triangle - Trikonasana
Side angle - Uttihita Parsvakonasana
Forward folding - standing, seated, including wide legged - Uttanasana, paschimottanasana, prasarita padottanasana
Chair - Utkatasana
Bridge - Setu Bandha Sarvangasana
Headstand - Sirsasana
Shoulder stand (into plough) - Sarvangasana
Corpse pose - Savasana
I’ll guide you through the parts of your body to engage in certain postures, where your gaze should be and how subtle changes can make a big difference. And, we’ll also explore what you can do if a certain posture just doesn’t work in your body.

Cornwall Yoga Retreat, January 2027
Fully booked - please email me at hello@hannahmcmartin.co.uk if you would like to be added to the waiting list.
Join me from 14th - 17th January 2027 for a yoga retreat in North Cornwall.
As the new year quietly rolls in, you’re invited to join me on this 3 night retreat in North Cornwall for an opportunity to rest, reset and recharge. Hosted at Highcliffe, the beautiful venue will instantly relax you as you step foot in - when you see the view from the living room, you’ll understand why. I’ve taken my time to find the accommodation - I understand how important it is to make sure it’s comfortable, spacious and clean. It’s warm, welcoming and the range of rooms helps to meet all budgets. The yoga studio is in a different building (about a minute walk away) and is equipped with all props, so all you need to do for our sessions together is just turn up.
This isn’t a ‘New Year, New Me’ sort of retreat - you won’t be asked to follow a strict ‘healthy eating’ meal plan. Exercise won’t be intense with a weight loss focus. Instead, we’ll be provided nourishing, home cooked meals by a local Cornish caterer; the perfect antidote to the indulgence of Christmas. We can often start the new year feeling bloating, sluggish and wired, so the food will focus on supporting your digestion, energy levels and blood sugar, to help to rebalance your nervous system and adrenals.
There will be a mixture of yoga - things will be more energising in the morning to help wake the body and mind, moving into places that might be feeling a little stiff. The evenings will be a lot more chilled, softer, slower. Think soothing restorative and Nidra, with a dreamy sound bath one evening. The sessions are suitable for all levels - I will adapt to meet you, offering variations for different levels and different bodies. Everything is optional and if you’d rather stay in bed for one of the sessions, that’s perfectly fine.
